Christmas Blues

Lately I've been having crying jags because my household is so cluttered, dirty, disheveled and most certainly does NOT look like the picture-book interiors we see in ads on TV at Christmastime.
I keep the beds made and the dishes done and nothing else. The doghair creeps along the hallway in wisps. Then I feel like I am a failure as an American woman. I need someone like you to remind me that housework really isn't that important! I just made a fresh pot of decaf Drunkin Donuts coffee and you're all invited over to cheer me up!
There, there! Thanks so much to dear Laurie for the cheering up squad! After all, it's a Merry little Christmas that we all want, not all stressed out and crazy-making. Here's what our tree looks like and we love it!

Aww sweetie, this time of year can be so hard. Remember that magazines(or tv ads) make beautiful pictures but show us nothing about the love or comfort in the home. How much better to have a home where it's comfortable to sit and gab over a cup of coffee without worrying that you're going to move something out of place or disturb someone's perfection. I'll take cozy, comfort anyday. To me, a little bit of imperfection is perfect.

OH my dear, thank you for this post -- as I look at my cabinets that need refinishing, or floot that needs washing, or the dust on my furniture, caused by both fabric lint AND boat-building dust. It just doesn't seem work the extra energy when we can sit and sew instead.

I'd sure like to take you up on the coffee and doughnuts!

I think most of us are thinking the same thing as you Vic. Don'T fret, tho. Enjoy the things you ARE doing, right? P.S. I had to vacuum my parlour just so I could layer backing, batting & flimsie down!! We're in the same boat.......Debra in Ma.

I keep a small sign(on the dusty piano) as a reminder to myself and/or to any visiting critical eye......it reads:
Dull women have immaculate homes.

Thanks for your post. I feel better about myself and my dusty, cluttered home because of what you wrote. There must be millions of us out there...quilting, doing art, knitting, making music, reading, even playing with the dog, instead of cleaning. And all of us are probably feeling guilty. Real life does not look like it's pictured in Martha Stuart Magazine. Most of real life doesn't even have hired help. What? No Cleaning Lady? The dust bunnies will wait for me...they will breed and even invite a few friends over...but they will wait. Quietly. Today I'll feed my soul. I'll quilt my quilts, love my dogs, and call it a day well lived.

Victoria, I can TOTALLY relate to what you are saying. Have you considered The FlyLady at flylady.com? Because of her very simple, supportive tips I've gone from CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) to peace. It is wonderful. She's not the typical organizer type. Please consider subscribing to her newsletter for a week or two to see if it is a good fit for you.
