Fabric Foraging & A Finish!

Yesterday I spent all day exploring cures for "Fiber-myalgia," as my Husband Wonderful laughingly calls it.

The Downstairs Gang from the Friday Quilters With Claire decided to take a road trip to explore a couple of fabric shops in Vermont.

First was "Quilt-A-Way" Fabrics in Westminster, Link, where owner, Carol stocks a huge selection of brights and batiks at rock bottom prices.

From left to right; Sue, Maureen, Beverly, and me (Victoria).

Carol not only gave us our Row By Row patterns, but also included a free pattern with a purchase for this handy potholder sleeve for a Corelle bowl in the microwave. Thank you, Carol!

We stopped at The Country Girl Diner in Chester, Vermont for a delicious meal and then went to our main goal for the trip, Country Treasures Quilt Shop which is also in Chester, Vermont. Link.

Although Country Treasures does not allow photos inside the shop to protect the pattern designs of the quilts on display, the front porch was fair game!

One of the owners even agreed to snap my moniker with my newly paid-for loot.

I loved shopping there and wished that I was going to live to be 120 years old for all the quilts that I want to make!

But before you say that all I do is buy fabric and never DO anything with it (there's my Mother's voice, God rest her soul!), let me celebrate the first day of August by showing you my big new finish!

Scrappy Jacob's Ladder II is done and all bound!

I love this quilt! It will be very hard to give it away to my worthless, but beloved, nephew, LOL!

You can see in the picture above that I chose to avoid the "turning-the-corner" difficulties of my 4-Patch pieced border by inserting one Half Square Triangle block. I love the way it solves the problem and it looks great.
My fabric choices were limited to traditional, Civil War, and some quieter florals and I'm very pleased with it.

You may click on any picture to enlarge it.

The setting for this one is different from my previous Scrappy Jacob's Ladder, as this one is "Sunshine & Shadows" rather than "Barnraising." Here is last year's edition for comparison.

This year's quilt has a 100% cotton blue flannel plaid backing.

The binding was a Judie Rothermel 25th Anniversary Album selection in a medium blue to go with that backing.

Hindsight is 20/20, they say, and I would probably choose a dark indigo binding if I were to do it over again. The light binding color tends to allow the viewer's eye to "fall off the edge" of the quilt, whereas a really dark note frames the edge with a "stop point."

Still, I don't mean to nitpick my own creation, it's just an observation for future reference.

I believe that this quilt is 83" by 83" so it's a nice queen sized quilt.

and on Patchwork Times, link.
Ooops! and on Oh Scrap! too, link.
Don't forget the Binding Blitz over at JulieK quilts, too, link.

Happy quilting!

Both of your scrappy Jacob Ladder quilts are beautiful.

I love your writing style! Your sense of humor, your enjoyment (and frustration) of life, and your honesty all come beaming through! You give me pleasure along with my morning coffee. Have a happy Sunday this gorgeous August morning.

Those Jacobs Ladder quilts are exquisite. I love both the layouts. You really know how to take scraps and turn them into masterpieces. If I look closely, will I find some of the civil war fabrics I sent you several years back? Joyce in CT

What a great scrappy quilt! The flannel backing will make it very cozy in the winter too. I had to laugh at your mothers 'voice'! I do so hope I'm having the same effect on my own kids.:)
