Reds and Blues

Last summer when I was trying to stay cool in the hot weather, I was working on Matthew's Midnight Blues quilt from Kim Brackett's book, "Scrap Basket Surprises." These are the 6" units that you might recall my having mentioned before on this blog.

Because I'm enlarging the original design, I used the big tables at The Golden Gese Quilt Shop (22 Liberty Street, Concord, New Hampshire) for a trial layout to check random placement.

I love the look of this design and although the scrappiness is controlled to two colors, there is a lot of eye movement to it. Thank you, Kim, for a great design!

While I was there at the Golden Gese, Maureen auditioned some new fabrics for her Dutchman's Puzzle quilt. All this month of January fabrics on the bolt in the shop are 20% off! Wheeee! The French General red by Moda will be her sashing and the brown Marcus Brothers is for her cornerstones. Looks great!

Beverly was working on a very intricate fused applique project that required a lightbox and tracing pieces. Here is the pattern mock up.

You can see that she already has the center field upon which the pieces will go all prepared.

Friday night we had a little bit of very "pretty snow" that clung to every branch and object, outlining it in a fringe of white.

It has all melted away in today's rain, but Miss Emma Lynne wore a red bandana for an accent to the snow while walking with the usually camera-shy Miss Tanner.

It's the New Moon, what a perfect excuse for a give-away!

These six Civil War reproduction Fat Quarters will be awarded and sent to some lucky winner who comments on this blog for today's date. The drawing will be held on Friday, January 15th, 2016.

Good luck and happy quilting!

Oh, I am so glad you showed the layout of that blue quilt, because I seriously could not visualize how that block was going to look! (And normally that's something I'm good at!) I was absolutely baffled. And wow, it's going to be gorgeous!
For the drawing, I hope you pick me, but somehow #1 never seems to win... 8)

That Midnight Blues pattern is really nice. It took me a little while to find the block units that you posted in the picture at the top of this post. Very clever!
Love those red/cream/blue repros!

That is a great quilt! I have that book but haven't used it yet. I do have a jelly roll just begging to be made into that cover quilt though. I just saw that your DH's name is Felix-that was my dad's name!

Your blocks are so pretty. Now I'm going to have to get the book, not only for that pattern but a couple of the others in it. I love the reds and blues and have the perfect quilt to include them in. Thanks - Rina

Wait, really the blocks at the top are going to make the quilt underneath them??? Really? Boy, I didn't see that coming. I wonder if I have that book too? It absolutely amazes me -- I can't find the units in that quilt. But it is a stunning quilt. Oh... I just saw it. Amazing. How fun is that. It seems to make its own sashing at the same time it makes the block. (No it makes, YOU make it! I need to give credit where it is due!) Very clever quilt pattern though.

I had to keep looking back and forth between the blocks and the quilt to see how the blocks were laid out to become that quilt. I love quilts that keep my attention to figure out they're put together. Lovely fabrics you're giving away, Vic.

Like so many others, I can't see how those blocks make that quilt. Well, others finally figured it out and I still haven't. I have the book, too. Maybe I need to dig it out and look.
That is a pretty snow--too bad the rain took it all away.
What a lovely and generous giveaway, and what a fun reason for having one. : )
Daughter Angie and her family arrive for a visit tomorrow. I am so excited!

I have that book also and now am going to dig it out, love yours and what a clever layout! We did not even get up to zero here and an outdoor football game to boot! I watched it from the couch where I was cozily binding a quilt. Love the fabrics and so my style........fingers crossed.

How interesting! Centers look like friendship star but the way the blocks are put together is so different. I'll have to see if I have that book in my stash too. Love your setting. Thanks for posting it.
