Orca Bay Selections

Yesterday my older sister, Suzanne came over to return a small thrift shop end table and a pair of fold-up bookcases that she had borrowed from me a couple of years ago. We had a great time visiting and I was telling her all about the new Orca Bay mystery quilt from Bonnie K. Hunter.

My fabric selection for Orca Bay is gonna be a really loud quilt! Red, purple, and green with light neutrals. I'm thinking of the Red Hat Society and the Jenny Joseph poem, "When I Am An Old Woman." Fire engine reds, gaudy lilac purples, and warm light grassy greens. Whew! Those are all, "knock your eye out" colors. I think that my quilt will look like a circus tent flap but I just love these brights right now. They are so very different from all the subdued colors of the Civil War reproduction fabrics that I've been using in both of my twin Sister's Choices quilts and the Across the Spectrum swappers quilt from Mccall's.

I will pull out the top piece on the purple stack because I see now that it reads as a black...too dark! And I might just lose the soft green paisely in the top of the green pile for being too yellowy. It is amazing to me what a help it is to photograph your selections and look at the pictures!

I am a big fan of the Jenny Joseph poem,  which is actually entitled, "Warning" and it is now available on calligrapher Elizabeth Lucas's website.

I bought one of the large (7 1/2" X 9") color greeting cards and put it into an inexpensive Michael's frame and hung it in my kitchen. My wonderful husband, Felix, did not pay it much mind. So one day, I took it down from the wall and asked him to read it out loud to me. He did. Then he looked at me and smiled broadly and said, "Thank you for letting me see what's going on inside you because I understand it much better now!" I told you he is wonderful.

Love your fabrics. I am still waffling over what I am going to use. I will probably play it safe, but I would love to use purples, oranges and blues. I just don't have enough oranges. :(

Vic, these are such fun! I found a scrap recently (still doing 15 minutes a day of scrap trimming) that has purple hats with big red plumes on it - only a 6" square but it was fun too.

I love your happy colors. I am still undecided on the mystery, but for sure would use periwinkle, coral and Spring green - pure and intense colors I love. Still pondering. Judy C

What fun fabric choices. I am still making my mind up, I might replace the red with orange and replace the black with brown.I am blog hopping from comments on Bonnie's blog to see what everyone is choosing!
