The Flagpole

My header picture has been a lie for the past 3 months because we have been unable to fly the flag on our flagpole. During a late winter windstorm (that I had stupidly forgotten to bring the flag down for) the flag and the rope and the fittings were all damaged. Felix and I had hoped that he could repair it for Memorial Day on the 30th, but alas, the parts were backordered.

When Felix, Matthew, and Matthew's friend and co-worker Cory, lifted the flagpole out of its mounting and laid it down, the gold plated finial broke! We were horrified that the piece of plastic cost over $70, but it contains all the internal swivel mechanisms that will prevent the flag from wrapping around the pole. Sigh. It is worth it to have it all right now. Here are the boys installing the new rope and fittings.

I had never saved the paperwork from when we first put this fiberglass pole up, so I had not remembered that it is 25 feet when it is installed.

It has been up since about 1995, and the new finial has been redesigned to be sturdier, so I'm glad!

After we raised it up, we all recited the Pledge of Allegiance with our hands over our hearts the way we were taught to do every day at school. I got a lump in my throat like I always do for the pledge.
